“Gender Equality is more than a goal itself. It is a precondition for meeting the challenge of reducing poverty, promoting sustainable development and building good governance.” – Kofi Annan
Like all other years, the Awareness Week at Spring Dale College, was observed from 18th July – 25th July in the loving memory of our Founder Father Sir B.S. Sood whose vision was not only to educate the child but also the family. Thus, contributing towards building a strong and dynamic society, free from all ills, prejudices and superstitions.
Every year, we, at Spring Dale College, commit ourselves to realise his dream and we take up a burning relevant topic to ponder upon and discuss. This year, the Spring Dalians dealt with a sensitive topic which was: “Gender Equality- Need of a Strong Society” to sensitize the young minds to go beyond the barriers of gender discrimination so rampant in our Indian Society.
We deliberated upon this and reasoned out the necessity to imbibe the concept of gender equality, where all can contribute towards the development of the society and nation as a whole.
The Awareness week began with the introduction of the topic. Nukkad Natak , skit , mime act , a short act about a wife being supported by her husband to take up a job, issue of transgender –their respect and acceptance in the society etc. were the stage activities conducted by the senior school.
The middle school children presented a number of activities like poem recitation – ‘ Ye Samaj Khuli Ankho Se Sota Hai, Maa Kehte Hai Aisa He hota Hai’ , an emotive dance on – ‘Deewarein Unchi Hain … Bekhof Azad Hai Jeena Mujhe’, depiction of famous personalities to showcase individual’s importance etc.
Besides the stage activities , the students at various levels participated in class-room activities like making paper bags & envelopes depicting gender equality and to reinforce the fact that no chore is gender biased , charts , posters , slogan writing , card making , book marks , collages , power point presentation , group discussion , poem recitation etc. to prove that all human beings are equally important & competent enough to contribute to the development of the society .
The children, who are the future of the nation, were made to realise that we only can create a society where all are equal & important. The practise of gender discrimination, which starts with us, should stop .We must pledge to create a society free of gender discrimination & endeavour to realise the goal of having a strong society where all human beings are equal. “I raise my voice- not so I can shout, but so that those without a voice can be heard…We cannot succeed when half of us are held back.” – Malala Yousafzai
Awareness week – a sensitization programme for the children was observed from the 18th to 25th July, dedicated to the fond memory of the Founders of Spring Dale Institutions Sir. B.S. Sood and Madam Krishna Sood. Every year during this week the students are sensitized towards a social issue.
This year the social issue taken up was ‘Gender Equality – the need of a strong society’. For the whole week the children were apprised to the theme through– stage shows, power point presentation, street plays and poster making.
The week – long programme concluded on 25th July to coincide with the death anniversary of our founder father Sir B.S. Sood. Homage was paid to the founders and an activity was conducted to pledge support for gender equality and saying no to Gender discrimination.
All the activities harped on the concept that having a gender equal society is everybody’s responsibility. We are known not by the gender but by the work we do and there should be no dominance of any gender. It is not just a mere thought but an action.
As a mark of honour and to pay tribute to the great visionary our Founder Father Late Shri B. S. Sood, a week long awareness program highlighting various social and ethical issues is observed as AWARENESS WEEK.
The theme chosen for this year was- ‘Gender Equality- Need of a Strong Society’. A series of class and assembly activities were conducted with the aim of sensitizing the students. Various classroom activities were conducted by the class teachers like-Making creative book marks, posters, cleaning one’s own classrooms, making sandwiches, slogans, storytelling, sports activities etc. to teach the gender equality to the students. Speeches were delivered by the teachers in Assembly throwing light on gender discrimination. Through skits, action songs, street play etc. students conveyed the message of gender equality.
On the concluding day of the Awareness Week, a talk show was presented by the students of class XII highlighting the burning issues and challenges of gender equality. A beautifully self-composed poem was recited by Palak of class XII A, which she dedicated to our founders. A survey report on gender preferences was also presented by the students of class XII. Everyone took the pledge to uproot this gender inequality not only from our homes, but also from our society.
